“The best coaches in the world told me that – whether it was a Trapattoni, whether it was a hot field or whether it was a thumb. I didn’t make up the stories myself. I felt and experienced that as a player, »said the long-time former Bundesliga professional at his presentation in Wolfsburg.

As a coach, Kovac attaches great importance to team spirit (“If it’s not right in the dressing room, it can’t be right on the pitch”), fitness, willingness to perform and hunger for success. “A player has to know that if you want to score 40 goals in a season, you have to work for it. A Lewandowski does that,” said the 50-year-old.

“The crux of the matter is: You can’t be satisfied with what you’ve achieved,” Kovac explained. “Unfortunately, in our business, you have to be greedy. Greed is actually something negative, a mortal sin. But to become a good, well-known, maybe famous and successful footballer, you have to invest more than the average.”
