The Verdi union is calling for hundreds of employees in the handling area at Düsseldorf Airport to go on warning strikes on Friday. Significant cancellations and delays are expected.
Verdi is calling on all employees of the baggage and aircraft handler “Aviapartner” to go on an all-day warning strike. The strike is scheduled to begin at 3:30 a.m. on Friday 27 January 2023 and last until 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. According to Verdi estimates, at least half of the flights are likely to be canceled or significantly delayed.
700 jobs at risk
The company “Aviapartner” is the market leader in baggage and aircraft handling at Düsseldorf Airport. After the NRW Ministry of Transport decided that the license of the largest handling service provider should expire at the end of March, the union sees 700 jobs at risk.
From April 1, 2023, these activities are to be taken over by one already active and two new handling companies. Verdi also criticizes the fact that employers refuse to negotiate a social plan with severance payments for employees.
“Tough Job”
“Some of the employees have been doing a tough job at the airport for decades and made a profit. Now they shouldn’t receive any severance pay, so they can then apply to new employers for the same job at the same airport with less income for temporary jobs,” criticizes Verdi- Chief Negotiator Marvin Reschinsky.
Verdi hopes that the passengers will understand. They would like a quick solution so that the airport and, above all, travelers “are spared strikes that last for days and weeks,” says Reschinksy.
