At the world’s most important presentation of architecture, 89 participants from different countries presented their designs and ideas. In addition, the public can visit 64 national pavilions.

The 18th Architecture Biennale opened in Venice on Saturday. The coveted Golden Lions were awarded. Brazil received the award for the best national contribution for its pavilion entitled “Terra” (Earth). “DAAR” with Alessandro Petti and Sandi Hilal from Stockholm and Bethlehem received the Golden Lion for the best participant. Nigerian architect Demas Nwoko (88) was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Lion.

The President of the Biennale di Venezia, Roberto Cicutto, presented the winners with the lions in the Ca’ Giustinian Palace. A jury of experts – headed by the Italian architect Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli – chose the winners. The Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano and Veneto Regional President Luca Zaia attended the opening ceremony and award ceremony.

The show, which runs through November 26, is themed “The Laboratory of the Future.” The focus is on the role of architecture and construction in relation to sustainability, especially in times of climate change.

This year’s Biennale is directed by the Ghanaian-Scottish architect and writer Lesley Lokko. The exhibition, centered around themes such as decolonization and decarbonization, is intended to tell not just a single story, but “several stories that reflect the bewildering, magnificent kaleidoscope of ideas, contexts, aspirations and meanings,” she said beforehand.
