Vaccination pan in Hanover: Employees mixed up ampoules | NDR.de – Nachrichten – Lower Saxony

Status: 04.01.2022 10:54 a.m.

The mix-up of the vaccine doses in the vaccination center at Hanover Zoo apparently affects only 21 children instead of 42. The Hanover region is increasing its controls with immediate effect.

As the region announced, a person at the vaccination center had mixed up the ampoules, although they are color-coded. The force used raised the vaccine for children for the first time, it said. It is not yet clear what consequences this will have for the person concerned.

From now on the four-eyes principle

In response to the breakdown, controls are to be tightened. “We have decided that there will be an additional medical supervisor on site today who is solely responsible for checking the correct allocation of the vaccine,” said regional president Steffen Krach (SPD). In addition to the four-eyes principle, the ampoules for children and adults are now also stored in separate refrigerators. “A mix-up must no longer occur,” says Krach.

But less affected children

According to the Hanover region, a total of 21 boys and girls apparently received the higher vaccine concentration of the Biontech vaccine intended for adults. A spokeswoman said that a new review of the processes revealed. Initially, there were 42 children affected.

Vaccination margin: No serious consequences expected

According to Marlene Graf, the senior specialist at the health department, no serious consequences are to be expected from the mix-up: “From a medical point of view, it is an unnecessary increased dose of the vaccine that should not have any negative effects.” According to the findings of the health department, side effects such as pain at the injection site or fever occur at most. According to the pediatrician Ulrich Baumann from the Medical University of Hanover (MHH), the side effects could be a little more severe than with the correct vaccine dosage.

Counseling services for affected parents

Region President Krach apologized to the families. All parents of the children concerned had been informed directly by the regional administration by phone and email, it said on Monday. Medical advice is available for them from the pediatric emergency services of the MHH, the children’s hospital Auf der Bult and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. So far, however, no one has reported there, it was said on Tuesday lunchtime.
