It’s a strange feeling just sneaking around someone else’s house. What if the neighbors call the police? Or a pit bull coming out of the garage? No, that won’t happen, I remind myself. Because even though I don’t know the people who live here, I know that they are open to travelers. Not just because they stacked their firewood in the shape of a heart. But also because there is a large gray sign next to the entrance. “Schellsch stop mol,” it reads. Or as you would say in standard German: Just ring the bell!
