“This tree brought us up,” says Cristina Stribacu, stroking the gnarled trunk of a more than 500-year-old olive tree. “He taught us everything we know about this country, he gave us our roots.” It is one of 19 trees that their parents once inherited from their grandparents. They formed the basis for today’s olive groves, which number around 3000 trees. As children, Cristina and her brother Konstadinos played hide and seek behind the mighty tree trunks. Today, the two produce one of the most sought-after olive oils in the Peloponnese under the Liá label. Their plantation is near the small town of Filiatra, in the Messenia region in the southwestern part of the peninsula.
