Lia Thomas achieved historic victory as a swimmer at the US College Championships in Atlanta. But one doesn’t want to acknowledge her.

Lia Thomas’ victory at the US College Championships in Atlanta is currently the subject of controversy. The reason: Thomas is a transgender woman and thus the first transgender athlete to win a title in the highest category of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the 500-yard freestyle. But this victory should not be recognized by a US state.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a statement acknowledging victory for another woman from his own state. This is reported, among other things, by “Der Spiegel”. DeSantis accused the NCAA of destroying opportunities for women: “Now the NCAA is trying to destroy women’s sport, they’re trying to undermine the integrity of the competition, and they’re crowning someone else as the women’s champion, and we think that’s wrong. “

Athlete from Florida is “the fastest woman”

Several media reported that DeSantis had denied Lia Thomas the win. Instead, the governor gave the title to Sarasota, Florida native Emma Weyant, who was beaten by Lia Thomas by 1.75 seconds in the same race. According to him, the winner of the event was Weyant, a freshman at the University of Virginia and an Olympic silver medalist.

“She had the fastest time of any woman in collegiate athletics,” DeSantis said of Weyant at a news conference. Ron DeSantis is considered a close ally of ex-President Donald Trump, who is still being tipped as the 2024 presidential candidate.

Gender debate in the United States

Three years ago, Lia Thomas was still competing as a man in swimming competitions. Her eligibility was also questioned by her University of Pennsylvania teammates, who said Thomas had an unfair physiological advantage. Ahead of the competition, a small group of protesters with banners also complained about the transgender swimmer’s participation. After her victory, Thomas received only muted applause.

In February 2022, the US Swimming Association USA Swimming presented new guidelines. In the future, a testosterone limit should also be provided here, but this has not yet been applied.
