Federal charges have been brought against controversial New York Republican George Santos, according to a person familiar with the matter. The news channel CNN first reported on the charges. According to CNN, it has not yet been possible to find out which allegations are involved in detail. The FBI and Justice Department prosecutors in New York and Washington had been investigating, among other things, allegations of misrepresentation in Santos’ campaign finance records.
Santos, 34, took office after it was revealed that he made up a lot of information on his resume, including information about his education and background. Santos, who was elected to a district that includes parts of Long Island and the New York City borough of Queens, has so far turned down calls from both Democrats and Republicans to leave office after his lies were exposed.
He was investigated for possible campaign finance violations. Also, in March, the House Ethics Committee set up a subcommittee to investigate his conduct.
Santos and his representatives are said not to have responded to requests for comment. A spokeswoman for the Brooklyn US Attorney, whose office is investigating the case, declined to comment. According to the CNN report, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he would look into the allegations before deciding whether to remove Santos from Congress.
