USA: Man executed in Oklahoma – Politics

John Marion Grant, 60, was sentenced to death for murder in 1999. It is the first execution in the US state in six years. The US highest court had previously approved his killing.

For the first time in more than six years, the authorities in the US state of Oklahoma have again executed a death row inmate. Convicted killer John Marion Grant was killed with lethal injection in a McAlester prison on Thursday, the newspaper said The Oklahoman reported. The now 60-year-old was sentenced to death in 1999 for the murder of an employee in a prison cafeteria – he committed the crime as an inmate. The Supreme Court had the suspension of execution ordered by another court lifted shortly before the execution.

In Oklahoma, executions with lethal injection were suspended in 2015. At the beginning of last year, the responsible authorities in the state then announced that they wanted to carry out executions with lethal injection again because a “reliable supply” of medication was guaranteed. In the last execution in Oklahoma in January 2015, a means was used that was not intended for an execution.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, the next two executions are scheduled for November 18 and December 9 in Oklahoma. In 27 of 50 US states, the death penalty has not been abolished or suspended by a moratorium.
