The US singer Britney Spaers has been completely independent of her father for the first time since 2008. That was decided by a court in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Judge Brenda Penny agreed to the singer’s attorney petition after a hearing and suspended James Spears, 69, from his position as guardian and administrator of his daughter’s $ 60 million fortune.
The suspension of James Spears is in his daughter’s best interests, says judge Penny. “The current situation is unsustainable.” Instead, the court is hiring a California tax advisor to act as Britney Spears’ interim asset manager.
With the decision, the longstanding guardianship dispute between Spears and her father is probably over. In June she broke her silence and attracted worldwide attention. “I’m traumatized,” she said in court at the time. And called for an investigation and imprisonment against those who supervised the guardianship of their father.
James Spears took control of his daughter’s civil life and finances in 2008 as she struggled with mental health problems and substance abuse. In the summer he also applied to be released from his duties as guardian.
At the hearing, a lawyer for James Spears called for the trusteeship to be terminated entirely and for James Spears not to be suspended. The court, however, followed the arguments of Britney Spears’ attorney, who had asked the court to wait before taking this step. He enables Britney Spears to investigate certain processes in the asset management of her father.
His daughter accuses him of unjustified commissions, high income and embezzlement. In June, Britney Spears said in court that she had been drugged under her father’s supervision to make her compliant.
