A woman has been pronounced dead in a nursing home in New York. She woke up hours later in a funeral home.

A spokesman for the Attorney General described the incident, which took place in a New York nursing home, as “unnecessarily caused trauma for the affected resident and her family”. A woman was pronounced dead there on Saturday morning. She awoke just three hours later at a funeral home in the Miller Place community.

Until then, the 82-year-old was housed at Water’s Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson, Long Island. After employees of the funeral home saw the woman breathing, they alerted an ambulance, which took her to a hospital, as reported by the news channel NBC, among others. The police did not release any further information about the condition of the woman.

Woman mistaken for dead – another case in the US

The New York incident came just over a month after a 66-year-old woman was mistaken for dead at an Iowa hospice. There, a nurse from the facility examined the woman at 6 a.m. on January 3 and found no signs of life. The resident, who was previously diagnosed with end-stage dementia, was taken to a funeral home. There, staff noticed that her chest was moving and she was gasping for air in the body bag,” according to a report from the Board of Inspections and Appeals.

The state fined the facility $10,000, the maximum amount allowed under Iowa law.

In Germany, the death of a person may only be determined by a doctor and certain signs of death such as dead spots and rigor mortis must be present. In 2015, a doctor was convicted after declaring a 92-year-old woman dead in Gelsenkirchen, but the woman woke up in a funeral home in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the trial against the doctor, a geriatric nurse testified who was present at the examination and was surprised that the doctor had neither a stethoscope nor a lamp with him and had not even touched the dead woman. The doctor was sentenced to a fine of 1,000 euros for violating the funeral law. The woman died in hospital two days after the incident.
