US Secretary of State Blinken announces ceasefire in Sudan
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced a ceasefire in Sudan. A statement from the State Department said the army and paramilitaries had agreed on a 72-hour ceasefire. However, previous agreements of this kind only lasted for a short time.
DAccording to the United States, the parties to the conflict in Sudan have agreed on a new ceasefire. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that the Sudanese army and its rival paramilitary forces, the RSF, had agreed on a 72-hour ceasefire from midnight.
The US government urges both sides to fully comply with this agreement. The parties to the conflict had previously made similar announcements, but the ceasefire was not observed.
Blinken further stated that he was also committed to a “permanent end to the fighting”. To this end, Washington will coordinate with “regional and international partners” as well as civilian representatives in Sudan to support the establishment of a committee to negotiate an end to the violence. Basically, the goal is for a civilian government to take power again in the north-east African country, stressed Biden.
Heavy fighting broke out in Sudan more than a week ago between the country’s two most powerful generals and their units. De facto President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is also the supreme commander of the army, is fighting with the military against his deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, the leader of the RSF (Rapid Support Forces). According to the UN, more than 400 people have been killed and more than 3,700 injured in the fighting between the army and the RSF militia that has been going on for ten days.
In large parts of the country there is a lack of water, electricity, food, medicine and fuel. Several evacuation missions are currently underway for foreign nationals, including those from Germany, and for numerous UN employees.
