US immunologist Anthony Fauci became known across national borders during the corona pandemic. After 38 years and seven US presidents, a new job is now waiting for the presidential adviser at the end of the year.

The internationally renowned US immunologist Anthony Fauci wants to resign as an advisor to President Joe Biden at the end of the year. The 81-year-old announced Monday in Washington that he would step down in December as chief medical adviser to the president and director of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases.

“I’m not going to retire,” Fauci said. Rather, he wants to start “the next chapter” of his career. He did not give any more specific information. In the Corona crisis, Fauci became America’s face in the fight against the pandemic.

The renowned scientist has headed the National Institute for Infectious Diseases for 38 years and worked under a total of seven US Presidents. He has been considered one of the pre-eminent infectious disease experts in the United States for decades. He is known far beyond the circles of science and the American borders. In the politically very charged debate about the corona pandemic, Fauci was also regularly the target of criticism and hostility.

Biden pays tribute to Fauci

Biden credited his adviser as a public servant who helped steer the country “with wisdom and insight” through some of the most dangerous and difficult public health crises. “I know that no matter what he does next, the American people and the world at large will continue to benefit from Dr. Fauci’s expertise.”
