Experienced diplomats instead of party politicians: US President Biden has named the ambassadors for China and Japan. A Harvard professor is sent to Beijing, and Biden’s predecessor Obama’s ex-chief of staff to Tokyo.

US President Joe Biden wants to send the renowned foreign policy expert Nicholas Burns to China as an ambassador. The White House announced. The former career diplomat currently teaches international relations at the elite US University of Harvard. In his previous time at the US State Department, Burns was, among other things, US ambassador to NATO. The US Senate has yet to approve the nomination.

Biden’s government gives China a prominent position in its foreign policy: The US president regards the world’s second largest economy as the most powerful competitor and the number one geopolitical challenge.

Ex-Chief of Staff in Tokyo

Biden nominated former Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama and Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, to serve as Ambassador to Japan. Japan has traditionally been one of the United States’ most important allies in Asia.

In Tanzania, Biden wants the United States to represent Michael Battle as the top diplomat. Battle used to be the US ambassador to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
