The driving service brokers Uber and Lyft are threatened with new uncertainty about the status of drivers in their home state of California. A judge declared a referendum invalid that seemed to have ended the long dispute over employment on such platforms. California voters overturned a local law in November that granted driver or food delivery service drivers the status of employees. The corresponding “Proposition 22” received almost 60 percent of the vote at the time. After the referendum, drivers can still be classified as independent entrepreneurs. Judge Frank Roesch in Alameda County, however, found that Proposition 22 had violated the state’s constitution. Uber immediately announced it would appeal.
