US: Biden signs law protecting same-sex marriages – Politics

US President Joe Biden has it Respect for Marriage Act signed and thus enshrined in law the protection of same-sex marriages at federal level. Marriages entered into in other US states must therefore be recognized in all states, even if same-sex couples are not allowed to marry there. Also, marriage is no longer defined as a union between a man and a woman.

“Today is a good day. A day when America takes a decisive step toward equality, liberty and justice, not just for some but for all,” Biden said during a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, naming the Deciding who to marry is “one of the most profound decisions a person can make”. The law recognizes “that everyone should have the right to answer these questions for themselves, without government interference,” the president said.

Signing becomes a ceremony

The signing of the law at the White House took place during a ceremony attended by prominent members of the LGBTQ community and activists. This was to emphasize the historical importance of the moment. Among them was American pop legend Cyndi Lauper. “Now we’re allowed to love who we love, which sounds odd,” Lauper told her. She is very grateful to US President Biden for this. The singer campaigns for the rights of the LGBTQ community.

Biden and Lauper were also joined by senior congressmen, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The Democrats were striving to Respect for Marriage Act by the end of the year while they still have majorities in both houses of Congress. The US House of Representatives passed the bill last week. 258 MPs voted in favor, including all Democrats. 169 Republicans voted against.
