US basketball player Griner transferred to Russian prison camp – politics

According to her lawyers, US basketball player Brittney Griner, convicted in Russia, has been transferred to a prison camp. The 32-year-old left the pre-trial detention center in the Moscow area on Friday, where she had been detained since her arrest, her lawyer Maria Blagovolina said. There is currently no information about her exact whereabouts.

Earlier this morning, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre an explanation: “Every minute that Brittney Griner has to spend in unlawful detention in Russia is a minute too long”, adding that the administration of US President Biden “continues to work tirelessly for her release”. The US government proposed a prisoner swap with Russia in late July to secure her release and that of former Marine Paul Whelan.

Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in February with a small amount of hashish and sentenced to nine years in prison by a Moscow court in early August. She pleaded guilty to the crime but also said she did not intentionally break the law. US officials visited her earlier this month after her appeal against her conviction was rejected by a Moscow regional court.
