US armed forces claimed to have killed an important al-Qaeda leader in a drone attack in Syria. This has weakened the terrorist organization in the long term.
The US military reportedly killed Abdul Hamid al-Matar, a high-ranking member of the Islamist organization Al-Qaeda, in a drone attack in Syria on Friday (local time). “The elimination of this leading al-Qaeda member will affect the terrorist organization’s ability to plan and carry out further attacks that threaten US citizens, our partners and innocent civilians,” said US Army spokesman Major John Rigsbee. in a written statement.
The attack came two days after an attack on a US outpost in southern Syria. Rigsbee did not say whether the US drone attack was carried out in retaliation.
