A 13-year-old apparently knocked over gravestones in the Jewish cemetery in Heiligenstadt (Bamberg district) in Upper Franconia. A witness reported the damage in September. At the cemetery, officials found that five stones had been knocked over with brute force and signposts had been ripped from their moorings. The police later received information about a suspect. The 13-year-old from the Bamberg district admitted to having thrown the stones over after an argument with his mother at the end of the summer holidays. The police ruled out political motives. A research project by the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments is currently systematizing the quantity and motivation for desecration of Jewish cemeteries. The researchers had already become aware of the case of Heiligenstadt.
