Upahl in Mecklenburg: The double village – politics

Upahl in Mecklenburg is supposed to take in 400 asylum seekers, although only 500 people live there. The residents are overwhelmed, politicians are on the defensive – and enemies of democracy sense their chance.

You don’t even have to stop in Upahl to find out what the atmosphere is like in the village of 500 near the A20. Where there’s a dairy, an instant coffee factory, and rest, lots of rest that may soon be gone. This is announced by the signs, clearly visible, on garden fences, on the hill at the entrance to the village, behind windshields. Painted on cardboard and sheets, the message reads: “No”, “Fear”, “Resistance”.
