Unterschleißheim – Helicopters are the main source of noise – Munich district

Take-offs and landings at the commercial airport in Erdinger Moos have increased again after the pandemic. However, the pre-crisis level has not yet been reached. This is also indirectly confirmed by current noise measurements from 2022 in Unterschleißheim. These result in a reduction in pollution compared to 2014. The Unterschleißheim town hall therefore rates the current report as positive overall. Nevertheless, skepticism remains: because the figures from 2014 and 2022 are only comparable to a limited extent due to the measurement period. And it’s not necessarily the jets from the airport that produce the most noise over the city, but the helicopters from the airfield in Oberschleißheim.

Like eight and a half years ago, the measuring system was again at the waterworks near Berglwald and this time provided data that did not give much cause for excitement. The landings are relevant for Unterschleißheim. The city reports that in the six weeks from the end of September to mid-November there was not a single case of a so-called aircraft noise event when approaching in a westerly direction. In 2014 there were still two. In the more problematic operating direction east, an average of two such noise incidents were registered per day; in 2014 there were three. In 2014, as in 2022, only the lowest threshold of the “level band” of less than 64 decibels (A) was reached. According to the city report, the average level was now 24 decibels (A) during the day (2014: 27) and 17 decibels (A) at night (2014: 26).

In 2014 measurements were taken in summer, this time in autumn

All in all, the all-clear: Unterschleißheim is not regularly overflown, reports the city administration. And yet the town hall views the result of the measurement with reservations because, unlike in 2014, this time the measurements were not taken during the main operating hours of the airport. In 2014, the measuring station was installed at the waterworks from mid-July to mid-September, and consequently – apart from the consequences of the pandemic – there were more flight movements for that reason alone.

SPD city councilor Thomas Breitenstein also attached importance to the statement that the exposure to helicopters had been measured, but not critically included in the assessment. Much higher noise peaks are reached with the helicopters than with the jets from the commercial airport. Breitenstein spoke of values over 70 decibels (A). Mayor Christoph Böck (SPD) agreed, but explained that this could not be an issue for the airport company. If you wanted to have a more accurate assessment of this, the city itself would have to commission a noise measurement. The measurements of the airport company should continue to take place.
