Unterföhring – new domicile for the fire brigade – district of Munich

The foundation stone has been laid, and now the project can continue to take shape on the large construction site for the new fire station in Unterföhring: At a ceremony, the municipality, together with the emergency services, sunk the time capsule in the ground and walled it in on a spacious area between Münchner Straße and Föhringer Allee . According to a press release from the town hall, Unterföhring’s mayor Andreas Kemmelmeyer (non-partisan electorate, PWU) recalled the complicated and, above all, lengthy search for a new location for the fire brigade, which is currently still located in the middle of the residential area at St.-Florian-Straße 2 is where there has long been insufficient space and an extension was not possible without problems given the prevailing local conditions.

After the municipal council had agreed to move to Münchner Straße in 2018, the building permit was granted in July 2021. However, because a Munich shell builder had filed a review procedure with the government of Upper Bavaria, there was a nine-month delay in construction, as the press release goes on to say – and that of all times at a time when prices for energy and building materials were rising drastically, also due to the war. After initially 22.6 and later 23.9 million euros in total costs, 27.2 million have now been approved by the municipal council. “It is so immensely important that you are housed sensibly, that every euro is well invested in this great project, for you and for our safety on site,” said the mayor. A modern tool shed and nine apartments on the roof for emergency services are being built on Münchner Strasse.

The new equipment house was originally supposed to be ready for the 150th anniversary of the Unterföhring fire brigade in 2023, but due to the delays, commissioning is now planned for the end of 2024. “It was a challenge with the specifications – the building had to be sustainable, economical and functional. The urban planning situation was also not trivial,” says Christian Lanzinger, CEO of the architectural office kplan. “This is a special day for the Unterföhring fire department,” Commander Michael Spitzweg is quoted as saying. The new home would improve the working conditions of the emergency services “significantly for the next 50 years or longer”.
