Union EVG calls on the railways to collective bargaining on Tuesday

Status: 05/15/2023 3:10 p.m

After the cancellation of the two-day warning strike at Deutsche Bahn, the EVG union wants to continue negotiations as soon as possible. She called the train for further talks tomorrow.

The railway and transport union (EVG) urges that talks be carried out very quickly on the continuation of collective bargaining with Deutsche Bahn. The union announced that she had invited the company “at short notice for Tuesday” to talks in small groups.

“Negotiations must now be conducted constructively,” it said. The foundations would have to be laid “quickly”. The aim of the scheduled talks is to prepare the official negotiations that are planned in Fulda in about a week.

“Deutsche Bahn has unequivocally declared before the labor court that it will meet our demands for the minimum wage,” said the EVG. “Against this background, we can now enter into negotiations – as long as the employer keeps his word. Otherwise, we are able to call for a strike again at any time, and that too from Wednesday.” The railway initially did not comment on the call for talks.

Due to the nationwide strike by the EVG trade union, special ticket rules apply to rail transport.

Warning strike canceled at short notice

The EVG had originally called for a nationwide warning strike for this Monday and Tuesday in the ongoing wage conflict at the railways and dozens of other railway companies. After a comparison between the EVG and the railways on the sticking point of the minimum wage was reached through the mediation of the Frankfurt Labor Court, the union canceled the industrial action at the state-owned group at the weekend at short notice.

However, the EVG emphasized that the call for strikes for some private railway companies still applies. Only the labor dispute at Deutsche Bahn was canceled. Restrictions are also to be expected in freight transport today and tomorrow.

announced restrictions stayed away

After the cancellation of the warning strike, the trains largely ran as planned on Monday morning, according to Deutsche Bahn. Thousands of employees were contacted at short notice over the weekend to fill as many shifts as quickly as possible, a railway spokesman said. On Tuesday, all trains should then run again according to the usual timetable.

In long-distance traffic, around 90 percent of the regularly scheduled trains are actually on the move today. However, travelers should find out which trains are running. The regional and S-Bahn traffic runs largely without strike-related restrictions. Yesterday the railways said that every third long-distance train was canceled.

In the collective bargaining dispute with the EVG union, Deutsche Bahn has described the minimum wage requirements as having been met and is demanding that the strike be abandoned.

Strike wave at the railway

Already at the end of March, the EVG, together with the service union ver.di, had largely paralyzed traffic in Germany. At the end of April, the EVG followed up with another eight-hour warning strike.

The union negotiates for around 230,000 workers. Deutsche Bahn wants to orientate itself towards the end of the public service. In talks with the industry, the union is demanding, among other things, at least 650 euros more per month or twelve percent for upper income earners – for a period of twelve months.
