Unesco award – Danube Limes is a World Heritage Site – Bavaria

Bavaria’s Art Minister Bernd Sibler sees opportunities for the municipalities in Eastern Bavaria in the tenth World Heritage award for the Free State. “This is a great opportunity for the regions to make their rich cultural heritage even more visible,” said the CSU politician on Friday after the decision of the Unesco World Heritage Committee.

The Romans once used the Danube as an extension of their border wall to protect their own areas. The Danube Limes begins in the Neustadt an der Donau area (Kelheim district) and leads in Bavaria via Regensburg, Straubing and Passau. “The inclusion in the World Heritage List is a clear sign of the importance of this historical natural border of the Roman Empire,” said Sibler.

Unesco has designated the Danube Limes as part of the border of the ancient Roman Empire as a new world heritage site. The committee of the UN Organization for Education, Science, Culture and Communication (Unesco) announced the decision on Friday at its 44th meeting in Fuzhou, China. The Danube Limes is the tenth World Heritage Site in Bavaria. The first was the Würzburg Residence, which was added to the list in 1981.
