The situation at a glance:

Since February 24, 2022, Russia has been waging a war of aggression against the Ukraine. Shortly before that, President Vladimir Putin had Ukraine’s right to exist as an independent state in doubt and the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics in eastern Ukraine.

Since then, the Ukrainian army has been fighting the invaders as best they can. Thousands of dead are reported on both sides, but exact numbers of soldiers and civilians have not been independently verified. The fact is: the humanitarian situation in Ukraine is getting worse every day.

The refugee agency UNHCR has now registered more than 17.1 million border crossings from Ukraine (as of January 3rd). The refugees are mainly women and children, as men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave the country. According to UNHCR, over 9.1 million border crossings back into Ukraine were registered during this period (as of January 3rd).

The EU and the USA reacted with sanctions. Besides, they supply arms to Ukraine, too Germany supports the country with arms deliveries. Also tanks of the class Cheetah received Ukraine from Germany. (dpa)

Russia’s ex-president Medvedev insults Baerbock

After Kiev’s rejection of the ceasefire ordered by Vladimir Putin for the Orthodox Christmas, Russia’s ex-president Dmitri Medvedev insulted the Ukrainian politicians. “Pigs have no faith or an innate feeling of gratitude. They only understand brute force and squeakingly demand food from their masters,” wrote the deputy chief of the Russian Security Council on his Telegram channel on Friday.

Also about Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock The 57-year-old said: “Even the uneducated woman Baerbock and a number of other overseers in the European pigsty managed to complain about the inadmissibility of a ceasefire,” wrote Medvedev. The politician, who was once considered relatively liberal, is now trying to use his statements to distinguish himself as a hardliner in relation to the West.

Putin ordered a 36-hour ceasefire on Thursday, to run from Friday noon to Saturday midnight: the time of Orthodox Christmas. Russia had rejected a ceasefire for Orthodox Easter last year.

The Ukrainian government has dismissed calls for a ceasefire as “hypocrisy”. Germany’s Foreign Minister Baerbock criticized the ceasefire as insufficient and called for Russia to withdraw in order to achieve peace. (dpa)

Hofreiter demands delivery of battle tanks to Ukraine

After Decision by Germany and the USA to supply armored personnel carriers to Ukraine has the Green European politician Anton Hofreiter also advocated the supply of battle tanks. “I would like, as the main manufacturing country of Leopard 2, that we start a European initiative for the delivery of Leopard 2 and together with Europe see what we can deliver to Ukraine so that they can liberate the occupied territories,” said Hofreiter on Friday in the ARD “Morgenmagazin”.

The strategy must be that Ukraine is supported with everything it needs on the battlefield and that includes a lot more. The chairman of the Bundestag’s Europe Committee dismissed the danger that Germany would become a party to the war as a result. “The more clearly we support Ukraine and the more clearly we signal to Putin that we will not let up with this support, the higher the chance that this war will end,” said the Green politician. Inspector: Patriot delivery to Ukrainians is a necessary effort

The inspector of the Luftwaffe, Ingo Gerhartz, wants to speed things up after the decision to hand over a Patriot air defense system to Ukraine. “Sending Patriot to Ukraine with training of Ukrainian soldiers as soon as possible, simultaneous deployment in Poland and Slovakia means a tour de force for our troops. But it has to be in these special times!” The Air Force quoted the lieutenant general on Twitter on Friday.

According to agreements with the US government, the federal government wants to make several dozen Marder infantry fighting vehicles and a Patriot air defense system available, as Washington had promised shortly before Christmas. (dpa)

Putin’s “ceasefire” eagerly awaited

At 10 a.m. Central European Time this Friday afternoon, a one-and-a-half-day and unilateral ceasefire by the Russian army is to begin, which Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin ordered in view of the orthodox Christmas celebrations. For the first time since the beginning of the war at the end of February there would be a ceasefire along the entire front line – if it is actually observed. However, that is extremely questionable. In Kyiv there is talk of “hypocrisy” and “propaganda,” and the federal government and other Western politicians have also reacted with caution. (dpa)

CyberPeace Institute: Hundreds of cyber attacks since the beginning of the war

In connection with the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the CyberPeace Institute in Geneva registered more than 850 cyber attacks in 2022. They were carried out by pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian hackers against targets in Ukraine, Russia and around three dozen other countries, including 23 in Germany. Pro-Russian hacker networks are becoming increasingly unpredictable as a result of ever-increasing networking, said the institute’s chief analyst, Emma Raffray, of the German Press Agency.

Targets in Germany were ministries, banks, internet providers or airports. Websites at the airports were temporarily disrupted, flight services were not affected, says Raffray. In September, five attacks with 18 targets were registered in Germany over two days. “Four of them were carried out by the Anonymous Russia network,” says Raffray. (dpa)
