Ukraine-News: EU extends economic sanctions against Russia by half a year

At a Meeting of EU justice ministers in Stockholm several representatives have spoken out in favor of an iinternational tribunal to create and the impeach Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Foreign Minister Annalena baerbock had himself last on the other hand a suggestion for a different approach joined, while conceding that Putin could not initially be charged.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague is not eligible to try the crime of aggression against Ukraine committed by the political and military leaders. The reason: Russia does not recognize its responsibility.

Therefore, the EU Commission in November two alternatives presented how Moscow could be held accountable for the aggression. On the one hand, this was the possibility of setting up an international special court. The second option was a special court based on national law and staffed with international judges – a so-called hybrid court.
In mid-January, Baerbock campaigned in The Hague for a tribunal based on Ukrainian law, the second option.
She admitted that she could not accuse Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This would be likely because of their immunity only after the end of their term of office.

Belgium’s Minister of Justice, Vincent Van Quickenborne, today called for the “big shots” to be prosecuted.
