Often criticized in Europe for the positions of its Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Hungary confirms its sad reputation on the occasion of Euro 2021. Some supporters have visibly found themselves in the spans of the Puskas Arena, 100% full and unaware barrier gestures, to utter racist insults. A homophobic banner deployed during Hungary-Portugal, then racist cries during Hungary-France, the picture is heartbreaking.

Alerted by the anti-discrimination network on the first case, UEFA appointed “an ethics and disciplinary inspector” to investigate. The racist cries, uttered by Hungarian ultras placed at the bottom of a platform, would have primarily targeted N’Golo Kanté, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappé.

The semi-finals and the final relocated?

These sad revelations come in a particular context. UEFA is considering relocating the semi-finals and the final of the Euro from Wembley to Budapest, if the British government does not lift the health restrictions linked to Covid-19, to maximize the number of supporters in the stands. Such behavior of the Hungarian fans has something to reflect on the instance.

In the same vein, the mayor of Munich asked for permission to light up the Allianz Arena in the colors of the LGBT flag during Germany-Hungary, in protest at the law aimed at banning the “promotion” of homosexuality among minors, in other words educational and cultural programs where homosexuality is mentioned, supported by the Orban government.
