Two Catholic churches in Strasbourg were damaged inside by an individual currently wanted by the police, we learned on Wednesday from the town hall.
Excrement was thrown on the walls of the churches of Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux and Saint-Jean, located a few hundred meters from each other, on Wednesday afternoon, said Jean Werlen, municipal councilor in charge of relations with religions.
The two religious buildings were then cleaned and there was no damage.
National and municipal police were still searching for the individual suspected of committing these acts on Wednesday evening. A witness was able to give the police a description of the suspect, who may have mental health problems.
According to Jean Werlen, “there is no message” identified at this stage behind this damage.
Jeanne Barseghian, Mayor of Strasbourg, said she took “the situation very seriously” and condemned “with the greatest firmness any attack on freedom of religion”. “I trust the police to shed full light on what happened and preserve public tranquility, living together”, she continued in a press release.
