Two Bavarian houses in the race for the European Museum Prize 2023 – Munich

The Sudetendeutsches Museum Munich is one of the three nominated houses from Germany to compete for the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) 2023. A total of 33 museums are listed as candidates for the prize, which has been awarded since 1977. German competitors for the award are the German Museum in Nuremberg and the Documentation Center for Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation in Berlin. On the international stage, the Olympic Museum in Sarajevo, the FeliXart Museum in Drugbos, Belgium, L’Etno in Valencia, Spain, and the Anatomy Museum in Riga compete for the award, which will be presented on May 6th in Barcelona. With seven nominated museums, Switzerland has the greatest chance of winning this so-called museum Oscar, which was originally established under the auspices of the Council of Europe with the aim of honoring innovation and excellence in the European museum landscape.

The Sudeten German Museum was opened in October 2020 in the immediate vicinity of the Sudeten German House on Munich Hochstrasse. It sees itself as a meeting place and central museum for the German-speaking population in the historical countries of Bohemia, Moravia and Sudeten Silesia, today’s Czech Republic.
