Twitter blocks accounts of journalists and competitors – Economy

Short message service Twitter has blocked the accounts of competing service Mastodon, as well as several journalists covering the social network’s billionaire owner, Elon Musk.

Late Thursday, accounts were released by reporters from publications such as the Washington Postthe New York Times, Mashable and CNN were listed as blocked and their tweets were no longer viewable, with the company’s standard notice stating that it “is banning accounts that violate the Twitter Rules,” Twitter also banned sports and politics commentator Keith Olbermann’s account, reported the news agency Bloomberg.

Competitor Mastodons Feed is also affected

Twitter also blocked the feed of social media site Mastodon, which previously posted on its Twitter page a link to an account on its own site that uses publicly available flight data to track Musk’s private jet. On Wednesday, Twitter suspended several accounts tracking the location of private jets, including Musk’s.

“I have not received any warning. I have not received an email or communication from the company as to the reason for the suspension,” New York Times reporter Ryan Mac tweeted from a new account. “I report on Twitter, Elon Musk and his companies. And I will continue to do so.”

Musk, who describes himself as a “free speech absolutist” and took over Twitter with the aim of eliminating censorship, tweetedthat “doxxing rules apply to ‘journalists’ just as much as to everyone else.” The term “doxxing”, sometimes also “doxing” is derived from “dropping docs” and describes the publication of confidential information about a person on the Internet.

Musk: “Delayed release of locations is fine”

Musk previously tweeted that posting someone’s real-time location on the social network violates company policy that prohibits the posting of certain personally identifiable information, “but posting delayed locations is fine.”

An email to Twitter requesting comment on the journalists’ suspensions, sent to the company’s general press inquiries address, has not yet received a response.
