Twelve of the 18 former police officers from the North Bac in Marseille will be retried, the prosecution having appealed after the first trial concluded with seven acquittals and suspended sentences for 11 defendants, we learned from judicial sources on Saturday.

This appeal from the Marseille prosecutor’s office “is not a general appeal but a targeted appeal”, on some of the facts alleged against these former police officers of the anti-crime brigade of the northern districts of the city and having been the subject of releases, total or partial, said the prosecutor of the Republic of Marseille Dominique Laurens to AFP, confirming initial information from the daily Provence.

Only two of the seven released police officers are not concerned by these calls and are therefore definitively cleared in this case.

Suspected theft of 9,000 euros

The prosecution notably appealed against the acquittal pronounced for the alleged theft of 9,000 euros from a dealer arrested with thousands of euros in small bills in his car, on August 31, 2012, in the city of Font-Vert. The only declared victim, this man did not appear at the trial and was not represented, even if he did indeed become a civil party.

Appeal was also lodged by the prosecution following the release pronounced concerning the illegal search carried out by four police officers in the apartment where a dealer stored narcotics. On wiretapping for six months, without their knowledge, in their vehicles, the four police officers, boasting of this search, seemed to regret having been interrupted by a third party, which would have prevented them from recovering 2,000 euros.
