Hundreds of emergency services are deployed in Berlin on New Year’s Eve, and the fire brigade has declared a state of emergency. Two men who had handled pyrotechnics were injured in Brandenburg during the day.

Around 1,300 people spent New Year’s Eve at Pariser Platz in Berlin’s government district. That is what the police said. Apparently many of them had hoped to be able to follow a concert at the Brandenburg Gate. However, unlike in previous years, the number of visitors there was strictly limited. Instead of hundreds of thousands, only 2,500 were admitted.

Unlike on New Year’s Eve in the previous two years, clubs and discotheques were open again this year. This is probably one of the reasons why many tourists flocked to the capital at the turn of the year, according to Visit Berlin. The hotels expected 80 to 90 percent occupancy.
