Almost two and a half months after the severe earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the alliance “Aktion Deutschland Hilft” took stock. A total of around 78 million euros were donated. In the meantime, the willingness to donate has decreased.

After the earthquake disaster in Turkey and Syria, donations of 78 million euros have so far been received by the “Aktion Deutschland Hilft”. A spokeswoman for the aid alliance told the editorial network Germany. In the first week alone after the earthquake from February 6th to 13th, 17.9 million euros were already donated.

In the past few weeks, however, the willingness to donate has fallen sharply. This corresponds to the experience after other catastrophes, since media reports and calls for donations are also fewer. But still many people would help. Around two million euros were donated between April 12th and 19th.

Many people in the disaster region are still living in emergency shelters – like here in Turkey (archive).

Hundreds of thousands of people homeless

According to official figures, more than 50,000 people died in the devastating earthquake in Turkey. About 5,900 people died in Syria. Hundreds of thousands lost their homes in the earthquake region, many people are still homeless and are holding out in makeshift camps.

The World Health Organization (WHO) spoke of the “worst natural disaster” in Europe in a century. More than 20 organizations, including Christian, Jewish and Muslim aid organizations, have come together in the “Aktion Deutschland Hilft” initiative.
