Former US President Trump’s tax returns are released under pressure from Democrats. But he’s sticking to his campaign plans.

Update from January 1, 2023, 11:05 am: After the controversial publication of Donald Trump’s tax documents in the last few days of the old year, the President-elect invited to the New Year’s Eve gala at his estate in the state of Mar-a-Lago. He was somewhat unperturbed by the bad news and reportedly stuck to plans to run again for US President in 2024. According to a report by the British Daily Mail Trump also addressed reporters present during the party and announced that his re-election campaign was going “really well”: “I just saw poll numbers today, they were fantastic,” said Trump.

Donald Trump pays just $750 in income tax in 2016 and 2017

In the pre-summary reports that the committee published last week, detailed information from Trump’s tax returns for the years 2015 to 2020 were listed – i.e. from the period shortly before and throughout his term as president. In 2016, the year he was elected, and in 2017, his first year in the White House, Trump paid only $750 in federal income tax and claimed high losses.

In 2018 he reported millions in profits and paid almost one million dollars in income tax, in 2019 his tax was around 133,000 dollars. In the last year of office, 2020, Trump paid no income tax at all.

+++ 4.35 p.m.: After a long legal battle, former US President Donald Trump’s tax returns were released on Friday. The publication is a setback for Trump, who was the first president since Richard Nixon not to make the documents accessible and who resisted publication.

Shortly before Christmas, a report by a US congressional committee revealed that Trump had not paid any federal income tax in 2020. The committee responsible for tax policy had previously voted to publish the documents.

How current the New York Times reported, Trump paid no income taxes in 2020 as his income has shrunk and losses have increased. In his first year as president, Trump reportedly paid $750 in federal income taxes and reported $12.9 million in losses.

House of Representatives plans to release Trump’s tax return on Friday

The IRS did not begin reviewing Trump’s 2016 tax returns until April 3, 2019, more than two years after Trump’s presidency and just months after Democrats took control of the House of Representatives. This date coincided with committee chairman Richard Neal (Massachusetts) requesting information from the IRS on Trump’s tax returns.
