Truck drivers block Denmark’s border crossings in protest against toll plans

A toll for trucks is to be introduced in Denmark from 2025 – much to the chagrin of truck drivers. In a protest action, they have now blocked important border crossings in the country with their vehicles. Ports are also affected.

Truck drivers in Denmark have blocked border crossings to Germany in protest against the introduction of a truck toll. On Sunday evening, the drivers placed their vehicles next to each other at the crossings in Padborg and Krusa, as various media reported.

According to the Danish newspaper “Berlingske Tidende”, the police confirmed the actions. Richard Borring of South and South Jutland Police said there were blockades at the motorway exits on the border with Germany. There were also protests in other parts of the country. The Copenhagen police wrote on Twitter that they were present due to blockages near the airport, among other things.

Companies want a levy on the price of diesel

Trucks are also reportedly blocking roads at ferry docks in the northeast port city of Helsingor. Helsingor is one of the most important ports in Denmark and is located directly at the narrowest part of the Øresund – the strait between Denmark and Sweden.

From 2025, a kilometer-based motorway toll for trucks is to be introduced in Denmark. The transport companies are therefore demanding that the toll be apportioned to the price of diesel.
