Trial in Munich: man attacks friend with champagne glass – Munich

Life could have turned out very differently: Alexander R. beckoned a career as a professional footballer with the Austrian Bundesliga club Sturm Graz. But at the age of 14 he got out of competitive sport and in life. Alcohol, drugs, the full program. Now, at just 19 years of age, he is sitting in front of the third youth chamber at the Munich District Court I – and is charged with attempted murder. Alexander R. is said to have rammed the stem of a broken champagne glass into the neck of his former buddy in a dispute over a girl.

Alexander R. speaks softly, you can hardly understand what he is saying about his life. The 19-year-old is a sporty guy with a black hoodie and a fashionable undercut. When asked about his youth, he immediately says that his parents separated when he was twelve. He once lived with his mother, then with his father in Graz, and finally with his aunt in Innsbruck, where he began an apprenticeship as a cook and slipped completely. “When I get out again,” he says, “I’ll move in with my parents so that I don’t end up in bad company again.”

The company he got into in Munich didn’t have to have been the best either. Alexander R. had taken a vacation and rented a room in the Hotel Bento Inn on Stahlgruberring. During a visit “in the city” he met Stefan W. They went around the houses together, consumed alcohol and drugs. They were real buddies, reports defense attorney Birgit Schwerdt on behalf of her client. But then Stefan W. fell in love with a girl and he had the feeling that the girl was more interested in him, according to R. There were insults and insults. Former best friends became enemies.

On October 31, 2020, R. had invited people to a Halloween party in his hotel room. And really terrible scenes were to take place in room 251 that night. The video recordings from the surveillance cameras flicker on the courtroom wall. You can see Alexander R. entering the hotel, then the later victim with company, and also the then 14-year-old girl, for whom, according to the public prosecutor, the two young men would have courted. Another point of contention that evening was a failed two-kilo shipment of marijuana. Alexander R. denies this.

A party with several people was going on in the room, including – according to the defendant – ecstasy, cocaine, weed and whiskey. Shortly before midnight, R. sent his buddy to get a cigarette. Before he came back, R. announced loudly that he would now hit and kill “the fagot”. When Stefan W. came into the room, R. grabbed a glass of champagne and his former friend by the neck and pulled him into the toilet. There he locked the door. According to prosecutors, the two are said to have argued over the insults and the marijuana delivery.

R. broke the champagne glass on the sink and pressed the stem against Stefan W. Then Alexander R. opened the bathroom door and the scramble shifted to the hotel room. R. put the handle on again and inflicted a two centimeter deep and four centimeter long wound on the victim’s neck. W. was able to escape from the room himself. He was operated on in a clinic. Without medical help, according to the indictment, W. would have suffocated from the heavy bleeding.

R. assures that he did not deliberately stab the wound, that the wound was caused by a scramble. He ruined his life with alcohol and drugs. “I’m appalled for going so far.” A verdict is due to be pronounced on October 22nd.
