Big tattoo explained
The military event, the Great Zapfenstreich, is carried out by a formation intended only for this one purpose, consisting of musicians, armed men and torchbearers – all of them from the Bundeswehr. It represents the highest distinction that a civil person can receive and only three people are entitled to it in Germany: the Federal President, Federal Chancellor and the Federal Minister of Defense. In addition, all military officers with the rank of general or lieutenant general can be retired if they retire.
There will be background music for the Great Zapfenstreich by Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is now leaving office after 16 years. The stave music corps of the Bundeswehr will perform a total of three songs that the honoree could choose herself:
- “It should rain red roses for me” by Hildegard Knef
- “You forgot the color film” by Nina Hagen
- “Great God, we praise you” from Ignaz Franz
