Every summer they hit the road. Philippe Gougler embarks on Trains like no other for thirteen seasons. Nans and Mouts always start their journey Naked and cheeky for eleven years. François Pécheux has begun to follow the flow of the water to At the end it’s the sea in 2018. As for Antoine de Maximy, he will celebrate the 20th anniversary of I will sleep at your house on RMC Découverte at the start of the next school year after having spent thirteen years on France 5.
All of them have the art of making us discover the world, but do they travel today in the same way as when they started? Have environmental concerns changed the way they travel? “Clearly”, admits bluntly Mouts, spokesperson for the tandem he forms with Nans in Naked and cheeky. Just look at the titles of the episodes to understand. If their first adventures led them to Scotland, Quebec, Iceland, or Morocco, in recent seasons they have opted for the Hautes-Alpes, the Pyrenees or the Channel. Not to mention the next unpublished (broadcast July 10 at 9 p.m.) where they will visit the Dordogne or the Lot. It was after filming in Reunion that they decided to favor proximity and to get rid of air transport, one of the most polluting. “We were at the airport with Nans and we didn’t feel well because of this paradox: we want to travel, to discover new horizons and, at the same time, to take the plane, it doesn’t suit us anymore, he remembers. It turns out that our flight was canceled. We wondered: “Isn’t this the right time?” As we had made a commitment with the production teams, we took the next plane but from there we said to ourselves: “now it’s local travel”.
Wander around your home
The Covid and the constraint of staying in France, or even at home, helps them to take the plunge definitively. “We said to ourselves that from now on we wanted to wander around our house”. Today, the promise of a meeting outweighs the distance travelled. A philosophy that the two adventurers develop, among other things, in their quarterly The living tribe. “One of the lessons of Naked and cheeky, is to realize that the encounter with the other is strictly independent of geography. You can experience this in your neighborhood, in your department or the region next door. It does not require going far, including for the change of scenery”. If Mouts has clearly reduced his carbon footprint linked to his travels, he is now working to limit that of his sedentary life as well. For this, he has become a vegetarian and plans to part with his vehicle.
Philippe Gougler scores a point just with the concept of his program: Trains like no other, the least polluting mode of public transport. “I have always tried to promote this means of transport, underlines the journalist. Honestly, it’s one of the best ways to travel because not only is it eco-friendly but it’s also a great opportunity to meet people. When you are at the end of the world in not too fast trains, what is the best way to have a good time? It’s being nice to your neighbor and then talking. “. In line with slow travel (a new form of responsible tourism which encourages people to slow down, not to link tourist sites, which in particular limits CO2 emissions linked to transport), Philippe Gougler defines himself as “an apostle of slowness”. “It’s my second way of being green. To make beautiful encounters, you have to take the time to make them. Not to add, to collect, to try to do as many things as possible. You just have to live them for the duration they deserve. Ecology, in this sense, I have always been attentive to it”. In addition, shoots grouped by geographical area as far as possible, with a reduced team. Only a director-cameraman and a sound engineer accompany Philippe Gougler on his travels.
What was not always the case in the past, not on this series, but on this type of emissions. Without language of wood
As far as equipment is concerned, Antoine de Maximy has been traveling light since his first I will sleep at your house. Only two small cameras are necessary for him to film his solo adventures. No cameraman or soundman. The one who will celebrate the 20th anniversary of his show at the start of the next school year on RMC Découverte (with two unpublished ones already announced) wants to be without language of wood. “If you want to be green, if you want to do something efficient, you shouldn’t travel because it’s not something necessary,” he believes. Me, it’s my job so it’s a little different.
What if, beyond the means of transport, questions of carbon footprint or other, these long-term journeys favored above all a form of commitment? François Pécheux sails along the water in At the end it’s the sea with the main objective: to go on a river and sublimate it for the spectator. “For some time, I have realized that by dint of meeting people who live along these rivers, hearing them say to me “it is the blood of the earth” or “the first cry of alarm is always given by the river”, it goes into me and I see personal changes”, confides the journalist. Thus, last year, it got involved in Living with rivers, a mobilization initiated and supported by the association Initiatives for the Future of the Great Rivers (IAGF) chaired by Erik Orsenna, in order to promote their preservation.
