Traffic light soundings: “The moment of truth” is approaching

Status: October 12, 2021 3:11 p.m.

It should be clear by Friday whether there is a basis for coalition negotiations. This was announced by the SPD, Greens and FDP after the second round of in-depth explorations. They continued to be tight-lipped on content-related details.

The SPD, Greens and FDP want to conclude their explorations on Friday if possible. The aim is to have a “basis for decision-making” by then in order to decide “whether we can recommend that our bodies start coalition negotiations,” said FDP General Secretary Volker Wissing.

The heads of the three parties had previously held the second round of their in-depth exploratory talks with one another. “We talked about all topics that are important for the exploratory result,” said Greens federal manager Michael Kellner.

SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil said he was aware “that we still have a way to go”. Nevertheless, he believes “that it can succeed”. “I think that can be good,” said Klingbeil.

Waiter spoke of a pleasant atmosphere during the discussions. “The amount of similarity has increased,” he said. “We didn’t just read the party programs to each other.” Rather, it was about solving the country’s problems. The number of similarities has increased and the number of differences has decreased.

Confidentiality should continue to be maintained

The three parties do not want to disclose anything about the content of the talks. Instead, confidentiality should be maintained. When asked about the differences in tax and financial policy, FDP general secretary Volker Wissing only said that they wanted to proceed “step by step”.

The next two days will now be about clarifying the big questions that pose hurdles. Klingbeil, Wissing and Kellner want to evaluate the previous explorations with their teams and summarize the results in writing. This will then be discussed again in the previous round on Friday, said Wissing. The “moment of truth” is thus within reach.

The pending break in the talks in a larger group is also related to the fact that SPD Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz is traveling to Washington for a meeting of finance ministers. Should there be an agreement on joint coalition negotiations, a small party congress would have to agree on the part of the Greens. The party was “able to make decisions quickly,” stressed Kellner.
