No new government in reunified Germany came into office under such adverse circumstances as the impending traffic light coalition is facing. In three weeks the SPD, Greens and FDP want to elect Olaf Scholz as Federal Chancellor. If by then the pandemic continues to develop as it has in the past three weeks, then the new head of government swears with his oath of office to avert harm to a people in which several hundred people die of Covid-19 on the same day; if the numbers continue to rise unchecked, then the new Chancellor will not face the first catastrophe at some point during his term of office, but at the moment when he leaves Bellevue Palace after being appointed by the Federal President.
