Tornado Cash developer Alex Pertsev, who was arrested in August 2022, was released from jail on April 26. He returned to Twitter, stating, “Sorry I afk (Away from Keyboard) for a while, did I miss something? ”
Pertsev was arrested days after the US government sanctioned Tornado Cash, an Ethereum cover-up service frequently used to launder stolen coins.
Pertsev’s arrest and subsequent detention prompted criticism that Pertsev should not be punished for developing open source code. The incident also raises questions about the future of law enforcement action against decentralized protocols such as Tornado Cash.
