Huge success in cinemas: “Top Gun: Maverick” is the first film with Tom Cruise to gross more than one billion dollars.

Next milestone at the box office for “Top Gun: Maverick”: The pilot spectacle with Tom Cruise (59) has now according to “The Hollywood Reporter” Grossed over $1 billion worldwide. The sequel to the 1986 cult film is only the 50th film in history to achieve this feat. After “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021), “Top Gun 2” is the second film to break the billion mark since the corona pandemic.

In the US, “Top Gun: Maverick” made another leap on its fifth weekend in theaters. The reason, according to “The Hollywood Reporter”: The film came again in selected IMAX movie theaters and other cinemas with extremely wide screens.

“Top Gun” and “Elvis” displace “Jurassic World”

“Top Gun: Maverick” reclaimed the top spot in its fifth weekend in US cinemas. The film had lost that to “Jurassic World: A New Age” in the weeks before. Now the flyer is leading again with $30.5 million in gross revenue. However, “Top Gun 2” has to share the top spot with “Elvis”. Baz Luhrmann’s (59) Presley biopic also grossed $30.5 million on its opening weekend.

Best for Tom Cruise

“Top Gun: Maverick” already marked a personal record for Tom Cruise on its opening weekend. It’s also the star’s first film to gross over $1 billion. Cruise’s previous hit film was “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”, which grossed 791 million in 2018.
