It was a long-standing project, brought up to date in recent months by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Principality of Andorra, with the objective of getting out of isolation this small Pyrenean state of 77,000 inhabitants. . Finally, the project to build an airport in the Pyrenees should return to the pile of ideas postponed to Greece.

At the end of the Council of Ministers, Wednesday, government of Andorra announced that it would not go further in the feasibility studies of this structure, imagined at 2,000 meters above sea level, on the Grau Roig site. The project leaders had imagined creating a track 1,800 m long and 45 wide, a way for the principality to directly welcome its visitors, who today pass through France and Spain.

Visibility problem

But there you have it, the conclusions of a report by the International Civil Aviation Organization commissioned by the Andorran government has showered the aspirations of those who imagined seeing land in the heart of the Pyrenees, not far from the ski slopes, nearly 350,000 travelers per year.

“The report indicates that the operations would not be viable from the point of view of safety, because, among other things, the visibility of the runway from the point where it is necessary to decide whether or not to carry out the landing cannot be guaranteed” , specifies the government. Jordi Gallardo, the Minister of the Economy, indicated that he would take a decision as soon as the final report was given to him, but he was waiting for it to stop everything. The announcement of this project had led to an outcry from conservationists.
