Tokyo: Café helps guests avoid procrastination

See the video: In a café in Tokyo, creative people are only allowed to leave when their work is finished.

The great thing about writing is that it can basically be practiced anywhere, professionally or privately. All over the world, authors, editors or programmers work with their laptops in public cafés or bistros. The special thing about this café in western Tokyo is that guests are not allowed to leave until their text is finished. Takuya Kawai is the owner of the “Anti-Procrastination Cafe”. “Usually, a café is a place where one can spend one’s time freely, but in the case of the manuscript writing café, only people who need to write something are allowed to come. When they enter the café, they formulate their goals, e.g. a 3,000-word script or a two-page column.” Guests can choose between “easy”, “normal” and “difficult” care. With “easy” you are left alone until the end of the work, with “medium” there is an hourly progress check by the bartender. Those who choose the “hard” option are silently pressured by the staff, often just standing silently behind them. “I’ve done about 80% of the work. I like that I can focus on writing the articles without doing other unnecessary things.” “I’m writing a blog post today. My goal is to deliver three blog posts and I’ll do my best to make it happen.” 130 yen is charged for the first 30 minutes, around one euro. For each additional hour, the price increases. According to the owner, so far all customers have reached their destination – although some had to stay after closing time to do so.
