To the north of Nice, the Paillon valley, a former red bastion, has become “Navy blue”

In the Alpes-Maritimes, Emmanuel Macron won the second round of the presidential election by a very short lead with 50.13% of the votes cast. A tight result obtained thanks to large cities, such as Nice where he obtained 55.39% of the vote. Indeed, in 122 municipalities of the 163 in the department, it is Marine Le Pen who emerges victorious. That is 29 more than in 2017.

The National Rally (RN) confirms its presence in the department, known as the historic stronghold of the traditional right. And this, even on the side of the Paillon valley, formerly nicknamed “the red valley”. North of Nice, most of these so-called working-class municipalities historically voted for the left. Until Sunday.

Very high scores for Marine Le Pen

In the first round of the presidential election, Marine Le Pen was already in the lead in most of the municipalities of Paillon. As in Drap (38.12%) or La Trinité (37.89%). In these two cities, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, candidate for La France insoumise, came in second place with 22.40% and 19.53% of the votes respectively. On Sunday, the voters who spoke chose Marine Le Pen, who won 63.44% and 62.11% of their votes.

In Contes too, where the elected mayor is from the French Communist Party, the RN candidate obtains the majority of the vote (64.95%). Where it scores its highest, in this valley of eleven municipalities, is at L’Escarène (74.49%). Finally, his lowest result was 56.40% of the vote, in Coaraze.
