The implosion of the submersible “Titan” cost the lives of the five occupants. According to a marine expert, however, they were probably not aware of the accident.
According to experts, the occupants of the “Titan” submersible didn’t notice anything more about the implosion of their vehicle. The pressure on the submersible was massive at such a great depth – the implosion happened in a fraction of a millisecond, quoted CNN on Friday as ex-naval officer Aileen Marty, a professor of disaster medicine. The human brain cannot grasp the situation so quickly. “The whole thing collapsed before the people inside even realized there was a problem,” Marty pointed out.
In an implosion, an object suddenly collapses if the external pressure is greater than the internal pressure. It is in the inverse proportion of forces to an explosion. Even the smallest structural defect can trigger such a catastrophe at great depth.
Submersible wreckage found not far from Titanic
The occupants of the Titan died in a way they didn’t even know they were going to die, Marty explained. “Ultimately, given the many ways we can die, this is painless.”
After days of feverish searches, the US Coast Guard announced on Thursday that debris had been found at a depth of around 3,800 meters just under 500 meters from the bow of the “Titanic” wreck. They belong to the missing “Titan” with five people on board. The Coast Guard spoke of a “catastrophic implosion” that claimed the life of the occupants.
