In January, Memphis resident Tire Nichols was beaten by police officers and died shortly thereafter. The man’s family was also present at US President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address. In his speech, Biden called for bipartisan support for police reforms.

After the violent death of Black Tire Nichols in the US, US President Joe Biden has called for bipartisan support for US police reforms. “When police officers or police departments violate public trust, they must be held accountable,” Biden said at his official State of the Union address on Tuesday evening (local time) in Washington.

Also present at the address were Tire Nichols’ mother and stepfather. The African American was brutally beaten by five black police officers during a traffic stop in Memphis, Tennessee, on January 7 and died as a result of his injuries.

“What happened to Tire in Memphis happens too often. We need to get better: train law enforcement better, hold them to higher standards,” Biden said. “Let’s get together and finish police reform.”

Biden has previously campaigned for police reform legislation

At the beginning of his tenure, Biden called for cross-party efforts to overcome structural racism. Even then he campaigned in vain for approval of a bill in the US Congress that provided for comprehensive police reform.
