Market Championship Results at St. Peter-Freienstein

ST. PETER-FREIENSTEIN. Over the Three Kings weekend, the market championship unfolded at the stocksport facility of EV St. Peter-Freienstein. A total of 20 teams, each consisting of eight shooters, participated in this thrilling three-day event, all vying for the prestigious trophy. The team from EV Gonidorf, captained by Karl Kvarits, emerged victorious as the market champion for 2025. The Ice Smurfs, led by captain Chayenne Pölzl, secured second place, while the Boys, under captain Gerald Heiland, took home third. The event was made possible thanks to the dedicated efforts of numerous volunteers, emphasizing a spirit of fairness throughout the competition.

Snooker Success: Mike Busse Shines

EISENERZ. Mike Busse’s journey into the world of billiards began at the age of 14, but it was his transition to snooker that truly set him on a path to success. After joining the ‘Pot Black Snooker Club Eisenerz’, Busse quickly made his mark in official tournaments, catching the eye of Austrian state champion Florian Nüßle at a competition in Vorarlberg. This led to an invitation by the ÖSBV (Austrian Snooker and Billiards Association) for squad training in Vienna, where he trained alongside top players, though he had to pause due to time constraints.Despite these challenges, Busse achieved a significant milestone by becoming the Styrian state champion for the first time in Graz in December 2023. He successfully defended his title in December 2024, winning every match decisively with a 3-0 scoreline. The 31-year-old proudly returned the trophy to Eisenerz, cementing his status as the reigning Styrian snooker state champion.

Nature Friends Ski Course in Gaal

LEOBEN/GAAL. January 2 marked a day of action for many families as the winter sports section of the Nature Friends Leoben hosted a ski course at the Gaal lifts from January 2 to 5. Adhering to the motto ‘Quality over Quantity’, nearly 50 children improved their skiing skills under expert guidance, participating in small groups on the slopes. The final race showcased the skills they had acquired, featuring exciting competitions among the young skiers. The ski course concluded with a traditional doughnut day and a special visit from ‘Mickey Mouse’. The next ski course is scheduled for the semester break. Leoben City Championships in Bowling

LEOBEN. The city championships in bowling attracted around 100 bowlers during the first week of December at the Kammersäle Donawitz. Organized by the sports club Mayr-Melnhof-Novopan, led by Berndt Nahrgang and section leader Johann Stabler, the event witnessed intense competition. In a thrilling final on Sunday, Tanja Pröll claimed victory in the women’s category with a score of 553 pins, while Gerhard Plank emerged as the men’s champion with 609 pins. Among the recreational bowlers, Monika Prodinger and Herbert Moder took the top spots with scores of 535 and 537 pins, respectively.

Austrian Athletes Shine at the Antalya Muay Thai Cup

LEOBEN/ANTALYA. The Antalya Muay Thai Cup, held from December 4 to 8 in Turkey, featured 538 athletes from 28 countries, including two competitors from KSF Gym Leoben. Rebecca Hödl showcased her skills, having already secured third place at both the World Championship in Patras, Greece, and the European Championship in Pristina, Kosovo earlier this year. In the tournament final, Hödl defeated a Turkish opponent, claiming victory and solidifying her impressive year. Elisabeth Hauzinger, competing in the -71kg category, earned a silver medal after a tough final against Hungary’s reigning European champion. Overall, Austria finished second in the team rankings, demonstrating top-notch performance and excellent coaching support from KSF Gym Leoben.

ESV Leoben Faces Tough Defeat

LEOBEN. In a rescheduled match of the first autumn round of the 1st Bundesliga East, ESV Leoben’s sports bowlers faced off against current table leaders KSK Klagenfurt – Magdalensberg. Unfortunately, it was a challenging day for the team, resulting in a disappointing 1:7 defeat, with Gerhard Plank standing out as the best player with 598 pins. ESV Leoben will return to action on January 11, 2025, for the first spring round against the same opponent at home.

Mika Wurm Claims Styrian Championship in Climbing

MITTERDORF. Last Saturday, the Styrian Championship in sports climbing (lead) took place at the Mitterdorf climbing hall. Mika Wurm from Trofaiach, at just 12 years old, secured the title in the U14 male category. His impressive endurance and technical skills shone through on the demanding climbing walls, leading him to a well-deserved victory.

LEOBEN. In the eleventh autumn round of the First Bundesliga East, the men of ESV Leoben faced SPG SKH/Post SV 1036 in Vienna, ultimately falling short with a 3:5 defeat. Marcel Trescher led the team with a score of 596 pins. The club expressed disappointment in not replicating their earlier performances, but they currently hold second place in the rankings. They are set to face KSK Klagenfurt – Magdalensberg again on December 7 at 3 PM in a crucial match.
