Three dead after accident on A24
After a serious accident with three fatalities, the A24 had to be closed for several hours. During the rescue work, members of the Croatian national football team attempted to pass the accident site on foot.
Three people were killed in a serious accident on the A24 on Wednesday evening. According to police, a driver lost control of his car while overtaking between Herzsprung and Neuruppin (Ostprignitz-Ruppin) in the direction of Berlin.

According to a spokesman for the Walsleben motorway police, the 59-year-old driver of a BMW wanted to overtake another car with a trailer at around 7 p.m. According to initial investigations, he lost control of his car in the left lane, skidded, broke through a wildlife fence and collided with two trees. The driver and his 47- and 19-year-old passengers were so badly injured that they died before the emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident. According to the police, the victims are a family from Berlin.

While traffic was being diverted past the accident site, police officers noticed two people walking on the A24. “They had obviously decided that they could walk home. The officers got them off the road,” police spokesman Joachim Lemmel told rbb on Thursday. According to rbb information, they were members of the Croatian national football team. They had played their second European Championship match against Albania (2:2) in Hamburg on Wednesday and were on their way back to their quarters in Neuruppin. The police did not want to officially confirm this.

The A24 towards Berlin was closed for around four hours for the rescue work and the investigations of an accident expert. Traffic was temporarily diverted at the Herzsprung junction. An expert was called in to clarify the circumstances of the accident. In the area there are no speed limit, the expert must now determine how fast the car with the three injured people was traveling.
