This letter written in 1964 by an archbishop already denounced “a seriously mentally ill person”

The revelations of Abbé Pierre’s sexual predatory behavior continue with the declassification of archives concerning him, decided by the Conference of Bishops of France without waiting the usual 75-year delay.

In a photocopy of a letter dated March 13, 1964 from Monsignor Veuillot, then Archbishop of Paris, that RTL was able to consultthe latter explicitly mentions the more than problematic behavior that Abbé Pierre could display towards women and young girls.

“Loss of self-control”

“He was indeed a seriously mentally ill person,” confides the archbishop, who then details Abbé Pierre’s “loss of self-control” and mentions “young girls […] marked for life.”

This letter also reveals the full political and symbolic scope that the founder of Emmaüs already had, considered “impossible [à] disavow politically” by the archbishop who observed that “accidents” do not happen when he has a guide who takes care of him” and recommended “escorting him as closely as possible”.
